This position is responsible for various aspects of the Clinical and Medical Affairs group's
clinical research, clinical safety surveillance, and scientific communication activities
relating to the use of Vagus Nerve Stimulation (VNS) Therapy for the treatment of epilepsy and
other potential indications. The incumbent will have a key role in assisting the group's Vice
President in these activities. The specific activities listed below may be split among
individuals when there is more than one Medical Director.


* Assists in the development of clinical research strategy and the development and review of
proposed clinical trial protocols
* Assists clinical trial managers by providing consultation for medical/safety issues that
arise in ongoing clinical trials
* Reviews serious adverse event reports and ensures appropriate handling
* Reviews narratives for serious adverse event reports
* Reviews and evaluates results from clinical trials and supervises the writing of final study
reports and other regulatory documents
* Provides consultation to Regulatory Affairs on investigations of safety issues
* Provides medical review of various materials produced by other Cyberonics' groups (e.g.
advertising, sales aids, speakers' slide kits)
* Provides medical review of proposed VNS Therapy publications and presentations
* Provides responses to healthcare professionals who request information about unapproved uses
of VNS
* Provides medical support for Medical Science Liaison and Marketing activities


* M.D. degree
* Minimum of 5 years post-residency clinical practice or academic experience in neurology,
psychiatry, or internal medicine
* Minimum 9 years relevant experience
* Demonstrated leadership ability 
* Excellent general medical knowledge
* Strong written and verbal communication skills
* Strong analytical and problem solving ability; proactive
* Strong interpersonal skills
* Ability to travel


* Pharmaceutical or medical device industry experience
* Board certification in neurology, psychiatry, or internal medicine
* Clinical research experience
