Job Description:
Caritas Good Samaritan Medical Center is a Catholic, not-for-profit, community teaching

quality of care to patients, the majority of whom live in 22 communities within the Brockton
region. 

 

Caritas Good Samaritan Medical Center formed in 1993 through the union of Goddard Memorial and
Cardinal Cushing Hospitals. The Medical Center became a member of Caritas Christi Health Care
System of the Archdiocese of Boston in 1999.  Caritas Christi Health Care, the second largest
health care system in New England, provides community based medicine and tertiary care in
Eastern Massachusetts, Southern New Hampshire and Rhode Island.  Caritas Christi through its
full spectrum healthcare services  seeks to affirm the sanctity of life, advocate for the poor
and disenfranchised, and exercise responsibility for the common good through sound health care
practice, research, education and innovation.

The Medical Center is a full service, acute care, hospital licensed for 212 beds, 17
bassinets, and 10 Special Care bassinets providing service for 14,000 admissions, 7,000
surgical procedures and 55,000 emergency service visits annually.  Several new service
initiatives are underway including a replacement facility for the current Emergency Room and
the creation of the J. Joseph Moakley Imaging and Cancer Center.   This center will provide
access to a full range of services for the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation
of cancer patients as well as the latest technological and diagnostic services. 

Position Overview

The Director, Perioperative Services has 24-hour responsibility for patient care and is
clinically, administratively, and fiscally accountable for assigned areas. The Director
assures that the mission, goals, and philosophy of the hospital and nursing service are
consistently implemented within his/her scope of responsibility.  

 

The Director, Perioperative Services has direct responsibility for the in-patient surgical
suite, PACU, Endoscopy Service, Preadmission Testing, and Same Day Surgery. The Medical Center
performs approximately 3,500 in-patient surgical procedures annually and 5,500 endoscopy
procedures. The Director works collaboratively with the Chief of Anesthesia and the Chief of
Surgery and cooperates in the overall plan for surgical services with the Director for the
Ambulatory Surgery Center, a free standing center.  The Director is accountable for a $4.0
million budget and a staff of approximately 60 FTE’s.  The position reports to the Vice
President, Nursing and is an integral member of the nursing leadership team. .

 

The Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate for this position will be an experienced leader with a demonstrated track
record as a successful manager for perioperative services.  A strong clinical background,
knowledge and skills in Operating Room required and experience managing related surgical
departments.  S/he will also possess:

Knowledge/Skills/Experience: 
·         Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing required. Baccalaureate degree
preferred. Master Degree in nursing or related field desirable

Clinical competence with a minimum of 3 years of surgical nursing experience 
Minimum of 3 to 5 years prior management experience in surgical services required
Working knowledge of effective surgical utilization, productivity methods and knowledge of
surgical inventory systems, information systems and staffing systems.
·         Current knowledge of surgical services trends, operational issues and Understanding
of contemporary nursing practice and healthcare delivery systems

·         Licensed or eligible for licensure as a professional nurse in the State of
Massachusetts

·         Knowledge of the principles of process improvement and statistical analysis.

Good budget and resource management ability
Proven hands-on leadership with ability to foster staff support and energize staff to meet new
challenges
