Bachelors or Masters degree in Analytical, Organic, or Natural Products Chemistry. Minimum two
years experience in a laboratory research setting applying spectroscopic, chromatographic and
analytical chemistry techniques. MS research thesis qualifies toward this requirement.
Experience must include the separation, quantitation, and identification of organic compounds.
A background in Natural Products Chemistry or Plant Biochemistry is desirable.
(1) Chemical analysis of plant cell wall composition (2) High-throughput metabolic profiling
of plant tissues. (3) Preparation of extracts from plant tissues, sample preparation and
derivitization using common analytical chemistry techniques. (4) Chemical analyses using
GC-MS, LC-MS, and FT-NIR instrumentation. (5) Planting, care, and harvesting of laboratory
plants for phytochemical analysis. (6) Data collection, entry, and management.
Lab experience with most basic analytical chemistry techniques including gravimetric methods,
spectroscopy, extraction and derivitization of analytes, HPLC, LC-MS, GC-MS, FT-NIR and
chemometrics is desired. Experience with spectroscopic methods for high throughput
compositional analysis is highly desirable. Experience with instrumentation software, computer
data analyses, the use of Microsoft Excel and Access for data management and automation are
also required. Experience with plant care and cultivation, automated processes, and lab
instrumentation will be an advantage. Experience in using these techniques for the study of
plants and plant metabolites is highly desirable. Good oral and written communication skills
will be an advantage, and the knowledge and practice of laboratory safety and chemical hygiene
protocols is required.
