DUTIES: The program director will have overall responsibility for corporate programs such as
the Pulling Together for Excellence program.
He/She is accountable for maintaining the integrity of the transformation intent and
minimizing any disruption. The program director will develop and manage the overall plan,
directly and indirectly, all of the moving parts as the plan is executed. The program director
is chartered by the program sponsor and will regularly communicate progress and issues to the
program sponsor and Executive Committee. The program director will have the following
competencies/capabilities:The ability to abstract and to see and present the big picture is
critical. Included is the ability to help others see their part in the context of the overall
design.The analytic side of the program requires a forward thinker, using the experience to
date to see the way forward for the project. The program director projects implication of
current state and anticipates the future.
The program must be sold to the business community and the program director must possess
strong business acumen to represent the impact and benefits of the program in business terms.
Progress will not come without issues and skilled conflict management will be required.
Addressing risks of capacity or culture require balancing of the needs and priorities of
differing teams and business needs.The ability to simplify and reduce issues to their
fundamental causes is important.
The program director must be good at presenting issues in a way that is amenable to solving
them.The program director must be a problem solver, either directly or through facilitationThe
managing of the transformation requires excellent planning skills. The program will comprise
many projects and the key skills required are integration and portfolio management rather than
the detailing of the discrete projects. Once planned, the components of the project must be
tracked and managed. A skill in managing many moving parts is required. The broad implications
across the organization require an understanding of the landscape and the political savvy to
The program director must possess the ability to identify and manage risk. Needs to adapt to
the changing business needs of a dynamic corporate environment. The ability to cope with
changing requirements and producing deliverables is highly desirable. In the storm that is
inevitable in a major transformation, the program director must be calm in the face of
pressure, charting the course and generating confidence in the program teams, the CEO, and the
Advisory Group/Steering Committee. Demonstrated history of successful delivery of global and
cross-functional projects in a pharmaceutical or related industry is highly desirable.
Knowledge of portfolio and project management best practices.
Minimum requirements: BA/BS degree in Business or related field, MS or MBA is preferred. 8+
years experience in project management. Strong program and large scale project management
experience. Must possess skills to direct efforts and develop relationships of
cross-functional and global project teams. Understanding of business process engineering,
which would include development of methodologies, repeatable processes and best practices for
project management. Excellent written and verbal communications skills. Must be able to
communicate with alllevels of personnel within Chiron, vendors and customers.
