Alexza MDC is a privately held specialty pharmaceutical company located in Palo Alto,
California. We are developing breakthrough therapies for the treatment of acute and
intermittent medical conditions. Alexza was founded by Dr. Alejandro Zaffaroni who is one of
the most successful entrepreneurs in the biomedical industry with a long list of successful
start-ups to his credit, including ALZA, Affymax and Affymetrix Corporations

We have an exciting opportunity for a Director, Business Development reporting to the Sr. Vice
President, Corporate and Business Development. This person will be responsible for the
development of partnership, alliance opportunities, and business development. Handle the
research and analysis of opportunities and assess potential markets to make recommendations
for new projects to be used for strategic marketing decisions. Negotiates various business
relationships and analyzes new market areas. In conjunction with scientific, engineering,
market research, and technical staff, plan and evaluate business development opportunities.
Determine project financial viability and planning of business development strategy. Develop
licensing objectives, policies and programs, initiating proposals, negotiations and
presentations for the acquisition of licensing opportunities. Involved in the assessment of
joint ventures and collaborative agreements in licensing opportunities. They will work closely
with our multi-disciplinary team of scientists and engineers who are dedicated to the
development of novel drug delivery technologies with the potential to revolutionize the
treatment of several common diseases.


Responsible for the identification, negotiation, and analysis of new business opportunities 

Develop and communicate an effective business development strategy with input from Directors,
Scientists, and other internal team members 

Provides hands-on leadership and guidance to multidisciplinary project teams in the
development and implementation of strategic alliances and business collaborations

Provides the leadership and experience necessary to plan, organize, and successfully negotiate
and structure deals

Assessment of business opportunities for a variety of therapeutic areas

Plan, direct and design efficient and effective business development programs

Oversee the implementation and follow-up on business agreements

Communicate the progress toward business development milestones to Company management

Collaborate with the head of Intellectual Property to ensure solid assessment of business
opportunities and IP

Skills required:

Strong negotiation skills and the ability to interact internally and externally with
executive-level management and scientific staff

Ability to negotiate a variety of business agreements including strategic alliances

Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate across functional groups 

Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to effectively lead
multi-disciplinary teams working within a fast-paced environment

Strong analytical, evaluation, and interpretation skills

Ability to integrate the business development function with the Product R&D strategy

Entrepreneurial and hands-on, comfortable in a dynamic company environment and possesses the
ability to multi-task and set priorities.

A strong team builder and team player 

Constant awareness of the impact of the business development strategy on the overall Company

Education and experience:

PhD in scientific discipline

Experience in the biopharmaceutical industry and proven track record in strategic alliances
and business collaborations

Strong understanding of product development and commercialization of products
