A personal coach to guide your life

Imagine having a personal coach who will inspire and motivate you to improve every aspect of your life _ not only your career, but also the way you think, the way you manage relationships and the way you feel about yourself.

That person is called a life coach, something unheard of only a few years ago, but now life coaching is one of the fastest-growing industries in the world, and two Australians, husband and wife team David and Lisa Rock, are spearheading its global expansion.

David and Lisa founded Results Coaching Systems in 1996, when there were only a handful of life coaches in Australia and the industry was still in its infancy even in therapy-mad America "Now there are thousands of life coaches here, and in the United States the industry's growth rate is second only to IT," David says.

In the past eight years, David and Lisa's company has spread nationally, attracted thousands of clients, and has opened offices in the US, Britain and New Zealand. David is even teaching his skills and systems in America, as a guest lecturer on the faculty of New York University .

David describes himself as an entrepreneur with a passion for human potential. After 10 years running his own health marketing companies, he decided that instead of going to weekend workshops where each participant was one of hundreds, it would be much better if people could have their own personal coach, someone who worked with a client over time and gave honest feedback and support.

Inspired by the thought, he set off to research, trial and develop his own coaching models. After seeing "the extraordinary results that coaching can produce", David started training other coaches to reach a wider audience.

"We have trained more coaches in Australia in the last four years than any other coach training company, and are now expanding into other regions. We have offices in Sydney, Auckland, New York and London," David says. "Our business is to provide not just coach specific training, but also the support and infrastructure that coaches need to develop successful coaching businesses.

David says the cost of life coaching varies. When starting out, coaches tend to charge a monthly retainer of $250, although the average fees tend to be around $500 a month. Advanced coaches like David cost up to $4000 a month.

"Results coaches typically work one-on-one with individual clients for a period of three months for one hour per week in person or on the telephone. During the first coaching consultation the coach uses a sophisticated process to help the client set three goals in the three most important areas of their life," David says. "Ongoing sessions then provide structure, feedback, perspective and encouragement to assist the client to achieve their goals as quickly and easily as possible."
