SPANISH TEACHER / FLEX (Foreign Language Exploration), 7th and 8th
Grades, Ridgeview STEM Junior High School
Teach Level 1 Spanish along with an introduction to Spanish, French
and German to students earning high school credit after successful
completion of a full year. Concurrently lead The Foreign Language
Exploration (FLEX) class for a 12-week period. Utilize combination of
lecturing, student exploration and cooperative group work. Provide
vocabulary introduction in the target language, focusing on variety
of activities to meet needs of different learning styles. Class sizes
range from 15 to 28 students per class consisting of students on IEP
Plans, 504 Accommodations and Gifted Students. Design Lesson Plans
for both classes and integrated performance assessments (IPAs) for
level 1 Spanish curriculum in the district.
* Named "Teacher of the Year" in 2010 for combination of excellence
in teaching and community organization efforts.
* Performed as Area Director (Central Ohio) People to People Student
Ambassador Programs (2007 to 2013), a national travel program that
takes students overseas for educational and cultural exploration.
Served as point-person in the Central Ohio area. Reviewed, trained
and qualified teacher leaders to accompany groups of students
overseas. Awarded "President's Passion Award" for service as teacher
leader in 2012.
* Instrumental in acquiring a "Leadership University" from the
program office to be held in Columbus, where teacher leaders from
radius of 200 miles were invited to come meet with and hear from the
People to People program leaders.
* Maximized learning capabilities by personally developing
curriculum for new class (Foreign Language Exploration) and revamping
Spanish curriculum for levels 1-2. Created Performance Assessments
for students to demonstrate their ability in Spanish. Created
essential outcomes, goals for class, courses of study and a pacing
* Served as Student Council Advisor for six years, organizing
fundraisers, holding monthly meetings, overseeing committees and
coordinating lunches with senior citizens in the community with
Student Council members.
- Led numerous fundraisers during tenure and through involvement in
Student Council including "Adopted Families" during the holidays
(raised $1200-$1400), Pennies for Patients for the Leukemia and
Lymphoma Society (raised $1000-$1400) and other causes including
breast cancer, ALS and local charities.
- Revamped idea of Student Council elections by instituting
practice of each President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer
had to make a speech to their entire 7th or 8th grade class
respectively to help encourage leadership, articulation and life-long
skills of interpersonal communication.
* Played key role in development of school-wide community service
day to help people in the Pickerington and Columbus communities.
Currently in year five participating in this day.
* Participated in district change to a proficiency-based program
designed so that students in all world languages much reach a certain
proficiency level in the three modes of communication (interpretive,
interpersonal and presentational) before advancing to the next level
of language, better equipping them to subsequent levels of language.
* Assumed role as peer mediation trainer and assist counselors train
students in art of mediation to help resolve problems between peers.
Includes 6 stages of mediation and practice sessions with goal of
classifying students as level 1 and 2 mediators, ultimately enabling
mediations with no adult presence.
PEOPLE TO PEOPLE STUDENT TRAVEL - Spokane, WA, Boston MA * 2007 to
AREA DIRECTOR (Central Ohio)
Supervised 10-25 teacher leaders across the Central Ohio area
depending upon how many students and groups were traveling in a
particular year. Ensured that teacher leaders held social event for
students traveling, 4-6 orientation meetings for both parents and
students, bon voyage parties for families, overseas traveling and a
planned reunion with students and parents 4-6 weeks after returning
from travel. Led training session for all interested teacher leaders
interested in travel assignments. Reviewed information meeting
protocol, orientation meeting protocol, required paperwork necessary
from each traveling family and online training due dates.
* Ensured safety of all students and teacher leaders at all time
despite variety of travel issues, working out solutions to problems
which may arise during travel.
* Travel with groups of students from Central Ohio and all over the
United States on 2-3 week cultural explorations across the world
including Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, China, Japan, India, France,
Spain, Portugal, Italy, Belgium, Netherlands, England and Greece.
