Job Description:
Director of Engineering (Enterprise Apps) Mid-Peninsula, CA

Description:

This is a stealth-mode search, so we cant release too much information at this point. We can
tell you that it is located in the Mid-Peninsula, and its with a healthy enterprise software
applications company. What we like about this opportunity is that its focused on engineering
and not on politics. The VP Engineering has strong executive buy-in, and he represents
engineering from a position of strength in board. He is well regarded as a person who is
passionate about delivering quality products and is recognized as a great leader. He wants
someone he can trust to deliver on these projects and hit their deadlines. What we like about
this opportunity is that you wont have to worry about any politics going on behind you,
because (as long as you do good work) youll have the VP in your corner to deal with any of
that. In this position, you can stay focused on driving engineering projects and not have to
worry about politics that would distract you from this goal.

Responsibilities:

You will report to the Vice President of Development and provide leadership for 3 enterprise
applications software development projects. You will have three 1st-line managers reporting to
you, each having their own development teams. You will be responsible for significant overseas
development and QA resources, and you will be working with project managers and architects to
define and prioritize needs for all projects.

Project Snapshots:

Existing mature product that must regularly be enhanced based on customer requests
Relatively new product and is a high-transaction application (J2EE)
Brand new product and is finishing its requirements phase (J2EE)

Requirements:

The successful candidate will be able to motivate development teams to deliver on demanding
schedules.

2 years of 2nd-line management experience of Enterprise Applications development teams (total
reports: 20+)
Solid leadership skills managing multiple enterprise application product lines through full
SDLC (major/minor releases) for a reputable company
Deep knowledge of full J2EE stack with excellent architecture & design experience for complex
enterprise applications (design patterns, UML, etc.)
Prior management of overseas resources is a strong plus

A plus to have any of the following:

 Database design experience
 SAP development experience
 Other ERP development experience
 Workflow experience

Personality Traits:

Our VP wants a frustrated engineer.

Those who have just had a wry smile, please feel free to send us your resume.

(We want to hire a manager who took a leadership position not just to graduate from
engineering. We want to hire a person who loves to complete engineering projects and is really
good at hitting deadlines and building good products. However, there are only so many hours in
the day to get things done as an individual contributor, and the drive to finish projects
outgrew the amount of coding output this person could achieve to meet this growing need. At
this point, our ideal candidate decided to take on the necessary burden of leadership, so he
could satisfy his desire to drive to deliver on more engineering projects than he could achieve
by himself. So, our ideal candidate became a frustrated engineer who became a manager to
drive engineering projects, not just get away from coding.)
